Indivisible to-do’s, National and Local

Indivisible National’s 5 Weekly To-dos – make time to make some calls!

Celebrate the IRA! Phone bank for GA Senator Raphael Warnock!

1.  Click here to register for a Give No Ground phone bank on August 22nd at 7:00 pm

We will be celebrating the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act with a phone bank to make sure we have the power to enact other impactful policy moving forward. Warnock won by just over 90,000 votes in his 2020 special election. We cannot afford to lose this seat moving forward.

The fight for our country’s future begins today. If we do not hold the House and achieve a real majority in the Senate, our plans to codify basic human rights will falter. To win, we must get the message out. Give No Ground is our home for opportunities to phonebank, textbank, canvass, postcard, and more so that when November comes around, we can say that we gave it our all for democracy. MAGA Republicans are mobilizing, but there are more of us than there are of them. Let’s make sure we show it!

The just-passed Inflation reduction act includes:

  • The largest investment in climate action in our country’s history
  • The ability for Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices
  • Continued savings on ACA Marketplace healthcare premiums
  • A commitment to reduce carbon emissions 40% by 2030

…And those are just a few highlights. To learn more about this historic bill click here to visit the Indivisible Unpacked resource. If you have time this week, call Sen. Casey and Rep. Scanlon to thank them for their votes.

Stay tuned for our next Indivisible Upper Darby meeting in September.  For now, here are some other ways you can stay active.

Postcards in the Yard: Tuesday, August 23rd, 7 pm, 629 Overhill Road, Ardmore

Our last summer “Postcards in the Yard” will be on August 23rd (but don’t worry, there will be more writing opportunities!). Join Upper Darby Indivisible and H-CAN Indivisible in writing letters and postcards to get folks registered, get out the vote, and get progressive candidates elected.

Bring yourself, a friend, some stamps if you can, and some snacks if you want! We’ll have all the other supplies you need and refreshments to share. RSVP by emailing  Pam. Note: event will be held rain or shine (we’ll be inside if it rains or is extremely hot).

Summer is for relaxing, recharging, and writing for democracy.
Every other Tuesday at 7 pm, June 28-August 23rd.
629 Overhill Road, Ardmore (Pam and Jason’s House)

If you can’t make it to postcards and still want postcards, contact Jenn Hallam at jenn_hallam@yahoo.com to see when there will be more Postcards on the Porch.

Call for Nominations

Last year, activism endured a great loss with the passing of long-time member of both Indivisible Upper Darby and H-CAN Indivisible, Nelson Vecchione. H-CAN has established an annual award to honor Nelson’s legacy and remember the difference that he made in the world, in particular his profound belief in advocating without alienating.

Those of us who had been fortunate enough to work with Nelson were deeply impacted by his commitment to activism and advocacy. He fought for the rights of diverse groups of people by appealing to diverse groups of people. He didn’t write anyone off as unreachable merely because they embraced a different point of view.

The Nelson Vecchione Award for Meritorious Service to Broadening Perspectives is established in memory of Nelson Vecchione and is intended to honor an individual who, like Nelson, builds bridges rather than walls. It will be awarded to a member of the community who brings together people of diverse beliefs and ideas to further the common good.

Please use this Google form to nominate someone who you feel embodies Nelson’s legacy. The deadline for submissions is September 30. The awardee will be announced on Nelson’s birthday, October 18.

Community Solar Bill HB 531

As you may know, we’ve been pushing for a Community Solar authorization bill (HB 531) for quite a while. Despite getting a huge number of cosponsors from both parties, the bill has been stuck in the House Consumer Affairs Committee because Chair Brad Roae is anti-solar and refuses to hold a vote or a hearing.

Now, we have an opportunity to bypass Rep Roae by amending another bill (related to water metering, but still pertaining to the Public Utility section of the law) that has already passed out of Consumer Affairs. Details are below.

We need your help! Please call your State Representative before 1pm Monday, and tell them to vote YES on amendment A05947 to HB 1718! Please also forward this message to your networks. We are setting up an action alert to go out early Monday morning, but it would be helpful to start getting constituent messages in ASAP.

A bailout for Big Oil is the last thing we need right now.

As we all deal with a global pandemic with COVID-19, we wanted to let you know how the Sierra Club is adapting and responding  so we can keep doing the important work of helping our communities, protecting our natural and human environment and fighting for a just, clean energy future. TAKE ACTION

This might be a new low, even for the oil industry. We just learned that Big Oil is trying to wring as much cash out of the pandemic as possible by demanding lower royalties for drilling on public lands. This would amount to a bailout for the oil industry — and a free pass to raid our lands for profit while the rest of the world is in crisis. It could also leave the country short of funds needed for recovery in the months and years ahead.

Tell Interior Secretary Bernhardt that an irresponsible oil bailout is the last thing our country needs right now.

This bailout would provide zero benefit for the general public. In fact, it would cheat taxpayers out of billions of dollars that could benefit those who are suffering in this pandemic. Trump’s EPA is already waiving pollution controls for fossil fuel companies right now, and an oil bailout would do nothing to address the current public health and climate crises.

While healthcare workers are scrambling for basic personal protective gear, Big Oil is still getting the red carpet treatment. At a time when he should be focused on aiding the most vulnerable Americans, Trump made time for an in-person meeting with executives from Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and Occidental Petroleum on Friday.1

We need to make sure the administration is hearing from us, too — tell Secretary Bernhardt that Big Oil doesn’t deserve a bailout.

Thanks for all you do,

Michael Brune
Executive Director
Sierra Club
