Call to Action: Advocate for Gun Safety Laws in PA

Four gun safety laws passed the PA House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, April 26. Now we need to build on this momentum to pass the strongest gun safety package in Pennsylvania in decades. Here’s what’s on the table:

  • Requiring that guns be stored safely in the home to prevent school shootings, youth suicides, and unintentional shootings (HB 731)
  • Requiring that lost and stolen firearms be reported to cut the number of illegal guns fueling violence in our communities (HB 338)

  • Creating Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) to prevent firearm suicides, mass shootings, and domestic violence homicides (HB 1018)

  • Enacting universal background checks to stop weapons of war from getting into the wrong hands (HB 714)

Urge your state representative to vote yes on this historic package of bills.

Supreme Court Votes for Gun Lobby!

The Supreme Court just ruled 6-3 in favor of the gun lobby in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, an extreme and dangerous expansion of the second amendment that elevates the right to carry guns over every other right. This ruling reverses critical gun safety legislation in New York and will cause similar gun safety laws in seven other states to fall as well. Americans will die as a result of this decision.

The Supreme Court had a chance to prove that our lives are worth the full protection of the law but, instead, they became yet another corrupt institution that values guns over the American people.

Thousands of us marched across 450+ cities in the world to let our elected officials know that we’re done waiting for action. As a result, a bipartisan gun reform package was announced ONE day later. This is proof that organizing works.

We won’t let this Supreme Court decision roll back our wins that easily. Local March For Our Lives organizers and community members will rally outside of federal courthouses across the country to protest the overt political corruption that led to this decision. If you’d like to learn more and take action, join us for an urgent mass call tonight. TAKE ACTION

By overturning New York’s common sense gun law on concealed carry, the Court is stripping states of the ability to protect their citizens from gun violence. This is not about responsible gun ownership, but universal gun ownership. We have seen what happens when states do not act to limit carrying guns in public spaces. We must fight now more than ever for our right to not be shot.

Join our mass call tonight to discuss next steps as a movement and in our advocacy work. TAKE ACTION

March For Our Lives

 Your 3 weekly to-dos

  1. Click here to call your senators and demand that they support Sen. Murphy’s gun safety package. While working to dismantle the Republican Party that has enabled these tragedies, we need to put as much work into preventing them from happening again as possible. Sen. Murphy’s gun safety policy is a step in the right direction towards true reform. Make sure your senators know you support it while reminding them that there’s further to go.
  2. Sign up for our Give No Ground program. Right-wing extremist violence is a Republican problem. They stoke the embers. They cater to the perpetrators. They write policies to enable further violence. We need to go all-in on making sure we defend our democracy from MAGA radicals this November. Whether it’s blocking gun reforms, gutting Roe v. Wade, or attacking LGBTQ+ kids gun safety, Republicans will continue to try to roll us back in time. We need Democrats in place to lead us into the future.
  3. Click here to call your Republican representative and ask if they asked for a presidential pardon for January 6th. The attack on our Capitol on January 6th, 2021 was an unimaginable attack on our democracy and the peaceful transfer of power. And, thanks to the hearings happening right now, we know that Republican members of our government were actively involved in this attack, and did everything in their power to get away with it. We need to know who they are. We must know who exactly attacked our Capitol, and we must hold them accountable. Call your Republican representative and demand they tell you if they asked for a pardon today!

Message from Houston

Hello Indivisiblings,

Greetings from Indivisible Houston! We are proud to be in the fight with all of you, and to disrupt this week’s Indivisible newsletter… though not as proud as we were to disrupt Ted Cruz’s evening last week when our board member Benjamin Hernandez took him on over his callous and deadly opposition to gun reform during dinner at a fancy sushi spot following the NRA Convention.

If you are wondering how we did it, we are happy to share it, and will be running a livestream workshop tonight, June 2, at 6pm Central Time titled “Challenge Them” on how to hold extremist MAGA politicians accountable on the spot. Bring your questions; unlike Ted Cruz, we will be happy to answer them.

Since sharing that video with the world, we have seen people across six continents express their gratitude and support. More importantly, more people than ever have expressed just how ready they are to take action when they see their own MAGA politicians, many of whom are so afraid of taking questions from constituents that they have disappeared from the public.

Yet the truth is that while confronting Cruz was the most seen part of our week, we have been proud to work with many groups such as Black Lives Matter HoustonMarch for Our Lives HoustonMoms Demand Action’s Texas chapterEverytownFIEL, and others as May drew to a close to support a counter rally right in front of the NRA Convention. Our numbers dwarfed the attendance of the blood merchants across the street. We also dogged the convention in advance of doors opening, and removed an agitator ourselves when local law enforcement failed to do so. In other words, we have been busy. Very busy.

But it’s necessary. Now is the time to stand up to the NRA and call out politicians such as Cruz, Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, and John Cornyn for taking NRA blood money. Those murdered in Uvalde, Buffalo, and the many other devastating mass shootings that have taken place since Columbine are on the hands of these politicians. The solutions they offer are nonsense; the solutions we all stand for are supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans.

Here’s how we’ll do it: first, join us for tonight’s training, and learn how to get into good trouble and challenge your reps on camera for the world to see. Then, take to the street with activists across the country on Saturday, June 11 for a national day of action to end gun violence. Click here to find your nearest event now, and invite friends, family and neighbors to march with usAnd if you are in Houston, we hope to see you at the March for Our Lives Houston as part of a national day of action calling for gun reform Saturday, June 11, from 10am-1pm at Tranquility Park located at 400 Rusk in Downtown Houston.

The Indivisible Houston Leadership Team

PA LAWMAKERS RUSHING GUN-LOBBY BACKED BILL THROUGH HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, VOTE EXPECTED *TOMORROW*

TELL YOUR STATE REP. MARGO DAVIDSON TO OPPOSE HB 1747!

SEND MY MESSAGE

We need you to take action right away:

Pennsylvania lawmakers are quickly forcing through a reckless new gun bill that would repeal the ban of open carry of firearms by people without a carry permit during a state of emergency. HB 1747 would also prevent the governor from restricting or limiting the sale, dispensing, or transportation of firearms.

This bill is backed by the gun lobby and would weaken common-sense gun safety laws that were passed to keep Pennsylvanians safe—and the next vote is expected TOMORROW.

Send a message telling your PA State Rep. Margo Davidson to vote NO on HB 1747 >>

National Gun Violence Awareness Day

Today, June 5, is National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the start of Wear Orange Weekend, when we honor all victims and survivors of gun violence.

Please make sure you’ve read this powerful message from Nate and Cleopatra Pendleton and Wear Orange today. We need you in this fight now more than ever to end America’s gun violence crisis and take on the deadly mix of guns, white supremacy, and racism that persists in our country.

Thank you for being a part of this movement,

Everytown Support Fund

Save the date: #WearOrange

Stephen— Save the date: Friday, June 5, 2020 is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. And we’ll all be wearing orange.

In 2013, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed in Chicago. After her death, her friends and family wore orange to honor Hadiya and the hundreds of Americans killed and wounded by gun violence every day. Every year since then, to coincide with Hadiya’s birthday on June 2, we’ve worked to continue their efforts by wearing orange on the first Friday of June and the entirety of that weekend.

So, on June 5th we’ll #WearOrange to draw our nation’s attention to gun violence. Save the date on your calendar and join us to raise awareness for gun violence and Wear Orange on Friday, June 5th and through Wear Orange Weekend.

Display images to show real-time content

This will get Wear Orange added to your personal calendar for June 5th!

Stephen—we know that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, gun violence is impacting communities across the country. And that’s why we’re still doing everything we can to make #WearOrange as impactful as possible. We’re organizing virtual Wear Orange events with community partners, so that Moms Demand Action volunteers, Students Demand Action volunteers, survivors of gun violence, and all people in America can come together in this movement. We’ll still be wearing plenty of orange, and we’ll still be connecting with one another to end the nation’s gun violence crisis. We hope you’ll join us.

Thank you for being a part of this movement.

Wear Orange 2020

P.S. You’ll find over 100 virtual events on our website with more added every day, including a national Students Demand Action virtual event. We’ll be in touch soon with more details.

Wear Orange June 5th

Gun Violence, yet again!

Indivisible writes:

While we were writing this email this morning, we got the news of the shooting at a high school in Santa Clarita, California. There have been 365 mass shootings in the first 318 days of 2019, and this is the 38th shooting at an American elementary or secondary school this year with a death or injury (Gun Violence Archive).

It is more important than ever that we send progressive champions to Congress who are willing to stand up to Republicans’ gutless inaction. And, it makes the conversation about endorsements and who we choose to represent us even more important. To take action, use our resource on how to talk to your member of Congress about gun violence.

Sending our love to California

Indivisible

Another mass shooting?

From the Sanders organization:

Yesterday afternoon, we watched in horror as we learned that a young man fueled by racism and xenophobia shot and killed 20 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

Then, this morning, we woke up to the news that it happened again. Another mass shooting. This one at a bar in Dayton, Ohio shortly after 1 am. Nine more dead and more than two dozen injured.

All in less than 24 hours.

There may be division in communities across the country on a number of important issues, but when it comes to the issue of gun violence prevention there is none:

Democrats, Republicans, Independents and even gun owners agree, ENOUGH is ENOUGH, it is time to stand up to the NRA and take action to make our communities safer from gun violence.

Just now, Gabby Giffords called on Senator Mitch McConnell to call the Senate back from August recess immediately to address this issue, and I agree. He should. Now I want you to add your name, and to take action to support Gabby and her organization:

Sign my petition: tell Senator Mitch McConnell to call the Senate back from August recess and to debate and vote on legislation that will make our communities safer from gun violence.

The days of the NRA controlling Congress and writing our gun laws must end.

My colleagues know that there is action we can take to stem this slaughter. And we know this because ours is the only major country on Earth with this level of gun violence.

We can do it this week. We can take steps that we know will make us safer.

And we should.
